Eating and drinking, again, can be limited to your hotel, but there are a few places to sniff out. On the main street, Mercato has reasonably good pizzas and pasta for Fr.16, or a little more in the evenings, while the fish at Hirschen is rightly celebrated (Fr.20–25). The latter also has good veggie dishes for Fr.14 or so. Onkel Tom’s is a tiny chalet at the east of town (closed Mon) serving up excellent (and enormous) wood-fired pizzas in a cosy ambience. For authentic, quality Chinese cuisine, try Wee Lee, on the main drag beneath Hotel Spinne (closed Mon), though it’s not cheap (Fr.35 and up); they do equally good Japanese specialities, with veggie options. There are a couple of obvious bars up and down the main street – including the misleadingly titled Espresso Bar – but the back terrace of Ye Old Spotted Cat in the Hotel Bellevue (closed Sun) is the quietest and most atmospheric place to enjoy a tipple as the sunset fades on the Eiger. |
