A Rich Swiss is Redundant Home > Business Guide > Table of Contents > The Swiss > Rich
Measured by income per capita, the Swiss are
the richest people on Earth. Some resented this leadership
and tried to impose another measure of
national wealth that would take into account the cost
of living (PPP GDP). By this criteria, the richest are
the Americans, and the Swiss come third. Whatever
the truth is, in Switzerland, you won’t notice much
of this wealth displayed. Apart from the highest
number of Rolls Royce and Ferraris per capita in the
world—many of them owned by foreigners—people
make it a virtue to keep wealth discreet. In Geneva,
children are shown the example of rich private bankers
who go to work either on bicycle or with the bus,
living statues of Calvinist virtue. |
