As you might expect from a city which plays regular host to top-level suits on unlimited expense accounts, Geneva has no shortage of stratospherically expensive hotels – the Quai des Bergues and Quai du Mont-Blanc in particular are shoulder-to-shoulder with them. There’s also a wealth of choice in mid-range rooms, with some bargains still available from hotels which haven’t yet updated to the slick, generic style that tends to prevail. Many of these renovated places are poor value: often you’ll find that characterful old buildings and/or swish reception areas prelude boxy, soullessly impersonal little rooms. The line of shabbier mid-range places opposite the station are much of a muchness, but occasional price wars between them can slash rates.

Epsom Manotel, 18 Rue Richemont (022/732 08 35, fax 738 85 47, info@manotel.com, www. manotel.com). One of the seven Manotel hotels (all in Geneva), with hundreds of reasonably affordable, spacious and well-appointed business rooms off the Rue de Lausanne, less expensive ones on lower floors.

Montbrillant, 2 Rue du Montbrillant (022/733 77 84, fax 733 25 11). Overlooking the station, with quiet and atmospheric modern rooms under the sloping roof in particular.

Strasbourg, 10 Rue Pradier (022/906 58 00, fax 738 42 08, info@hotel-strasbourg-geneva.ch, www.hotel-strasbourg-geneva.ch). Top station-area choice, on a quiet backstreet, renovated in classic style, with good service and cosy rooms.

Tiffany, 1 Rue des Marbriers (022/329 33 11, fax 320 89 91, hoteltiffany@swissonline.ch). Attractive, cosy and homely Art Deco-style place near Plainpalais, with efficient, helpful staff.
