Martigny’s station is at the northeastern end of Avenue
de la Gare, which cuts a broad swathe through the centre. At the other end,
500m away, is the main Place Centrale, with the tourist office on one
side (July & Aug Mon–Fri 9am–6pm, Sat 9am–noon & 2–6pm, Sun 10am–noon & 4–6pm;
Sept–June Mon–Fri 9am–noon & 1.30–6pm, Sat 9am–noon; May, June, Sept & Oct also
Sat 2–5pm; 027/721 22 20). They’re well equipped with information and maps for
the whole area, including the routes up to the Grand-St-Bernard
pass and Verbier,
and the Val
de Bagnes. The Fondation Gianadda is on Rue du Forum about 500m south of
Place Centrale, well signposted. The small Old Town, or Bourg, is a world apart,
with cobbled lanes, old auberges and a villagey atmosphere, 1.5km southwest
of the centre. |
