Escalade's Celebration

Click to enlarge this picture (400x280 pixels)

Geneva celebrates every year on December the 12th the "Escalade". This commemorates the victory of the people of Geneva against their neighbors from Savoy who tried to invade the city at night. They were defeated and numerous feats are celebrated. One lady emptied a caldron of soup on a soldier from her window. To celebrate this, all chocolate makers of Geneva make chocolate caldrons filled with marzipan on this day. When Genevans celebrate at home, the youngest and olded member of the family will take a sword together and cut the chocolate caldron in one blow. Everybody in the room shouts "So will perish the ennemies of the Republic"!

On this image you see some of the many people who dress up in historic costumes and parade through the streets of the Old Town of Geneva.
