The village is crammed with eating places of various descriptions: a five-minute stroll will turn up something to fill a gap. Snacks and inexpensive pizzas can be had at Kiosk Charregass, at Oberstadt 10 (closed Mon); there’s a Migros self-service diner two minutes north of the Untertor gate at the western end of Understadt; and an inexpensive crêperie at Understadt 10. Otherwise, you’re looking at more formal, expensive dining. Beside the bridge at Rhigasse 8 is the Rheinfels (052/741 21 44; closed Wed), with an atmospheric all-wood dining room specializing in excellent fish, menus costing around Fr.35. The gorgeous interior of the Roten Ochsen on Rathausplatz (052/741 23 28; closed Mon) is dripping with atmosphere to suit the outstanding food, purely local ingredients going into their Swiss specialities. Top choice is the Sonne, also on Rathausplatz (052/741 21 28; closed Tues & Wed), with the ground-floor Weinstube serving excellent daily menus for around Fr.25 prepared in the same kitchen as the gourmet delights which might set you back Fr.60 or more in the restaurant upstairs. Prominent on a hill above the town is Schloss Hohenklingen, formerly the residence of the feudal lords of the area and now converted into a restaurant (052/741 21 37; closed Mon & Jan–Feb), boasting views at least as good as the food.
