As you might expect, Davos is packed with accommodation options, but none could be called a bargain. Prices get hiked ruthlessly across the board in the winter season. Beware, too, that virtually all facilities and services are closed in the between-seasons, from mid-April until June and mid-October until mid-December.

There’s a campsite, Fährich, about 1km south of Dorf on the road towards the Flüela Pass (081/416 10 43; May–Sept). A bus stops outside. The HI hostel, Höhwald, is in Wolfgang, pleasantly situated in the trees on the east side of the Davosersee lake (081/416 14 84, fax 416 50 55; a), with dorms for Fr.21; take bus #6 or #11 to Seebühl, from where it’s a five-minute walk. Otherwise, there’s a fistful of places both in Platz and Dorf and the surrounding area which offer dormitory places: the huge Sportzentrum, at Talstrasse 41 in the middle of Platz (081/415 36 36, fax 415 36 37), is one of the most convenient, with simple, brand-new lino-and-plastic-style four-bed rooms for Fr.48 per bed – but check with the tourist office, who keep a complete list.

Alte Post, Berglistutz 4, Platz (phone & fax 081/413 54 03, jakobshorn@spin.ch, www.fun-mountain.ch). Serviceable little place beside Platz station that offers winter weekend deals of two nights’ B&B in a double room plus a two day lift pass for the Jakobshorn for Fr.160 per person.

Bahnhof-Terminus, Talstrasse 3, Platz (081/413 25 25, fax 413 71 77, bahnhof-terminus@bluewin.ch, www.bestwestern.com). Large, airy rooms and private parking directly opposite Platz station.

Berghotel Schatzalp, on Schatzalp above Platz (081/413 83 31, fax 413 13 44, berghotel schatzalp@bluewin.ch). Although there’s any number of five-star palaces in Davos, this old Jugendstil sanatorium is the most characterful top-end accommodation by a long streak, perched on a tranquil terrace 300m above the town and only accessible by funicular. Views from the ranks of balconied rooms – which boast up to four more hours of sunshine per day than the town – over the Jakobshorn and beyond are worth paying for.

Edelweiss, Rossweidstrasse 9, Platz (081/416 10 33, fax 416 11 30, edelweiss-davos@gr-net.ch). The best in this price range, with private parking and a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere.

Ochsen, Talstrasse 10, Platz (081/413 52 22, fax 413 76 71). Bright, cosy rooms, many with balconies, close to Platz station.

Pischa, Strelastrasse 2, Platz (081/413 55 13, fax 413 16 19, pischa@bluewin.ch). Pleasant, cosy and quiet, way up above Platz (with a free shuttle bus up and down the hill). Relatively small price-hike makes it good value in winter.

Rosenhügel, Rosenhügelweg 5, Platz (081/413 54 25, fax 413 12 31). Perched on a terrace above the Platz tourist office, this friendly place has a choice of en-suite and shared-bath rooms, some with good views over the town.

Soliva, Symondsstrasse 7, Platz (081/416 57 27, fax 416 71 67). Very small, quiet family-run B&B opposite the Kongresszentrum.
