Meiringen’s train station is in the town centre, with the tourist office opposite (July & Aug Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 8am–noon & 4–6pm; Sept–June Mon–Fri 8am–noon & 2–6pm, Sat 8am–noon; 033/972 50 50, www.meiringenhasliberg.ch). Innertkirchen, 1km beyond the Aare gorge and served by regular buses, has four campsites, best of which is the year-round Aareschlucht (033/971 53 32). Hotels within Meiringen include the Victoria on Bahnhofplatz (033/972 10 40, fax 972 10 45; b), under new management, entirely renovated, and excellent value, although undercut in price by the appealing old Hirschen, 300m east on Rudenz (033/971 18 12, fax 971 47 12; a), with shared bath old-style rooms. Conan Doyle’s old haunt, the Parkhotel du Sauvage (033/971 41 41, fax 971 43 00; d) is still around: the management undoubtedly benefits by a few francs from associations with fame, but can still come up with the appropriate atmosphere and comforts. Eating and drinking is a case of follow-your-nose: the Victoria has a decent-ish restaurant, with some veggie options, as does the Alpin Sherpa hotel opposite. The best meringue in Meiringen, by all accounts, is served at the low-key Café Brunner, Bahnhofstrasse 8 – but on careful analysis you may feel that the ones whipped up over the mountains at Kemmeriboden steal a march.
